AMD launches ‘Radeon Instinct’ GPU, world first 7NM GPU targeting AI and ML industry

AMD, American multinational semiconductor Company launches world’s first 7NM GPU for machine learning and AI tasks. This GPU is designed to process Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence jobs at very high speed. This GPU is not for gamers, its will be used by Machine Learning and AI professionals for running heavy processing jobs.

This GPU is given a name ‘Radeon Instinct’ GPU and fully supports PCIe 4.0 features. This GPU fits into the PCIe slots and called graphic cards, but it does not meant for gaming applications. There are two models of this GPU, the MI50 and MI60.

This GPU is developed using a 7nm process, and with the release of this GPU AMD becomes world’s first company to develop GPU with 7nm process. With this 7nm (7 nanometer) technology based GPU AMD beats Intel and Nvidia in the field of 7nm innovation.

AMD ‘Radeon Instinct’ GPU’s runs fast and consumes less power, which is good for AI and Machine Learning industry where lot of processing power is required. This provides fast and more efficient processing while consuming less power.

GPU is PCIe 4.0 specifications compliant and communicates at higher bandwidth and lower latency as compared to previous GPU’s.

GPU supports HBM2 (High Bandwidth Memory 2) which gives a whopping 1 TB/s bandwidth during heavy processing. System integrator can also use AMD’s Infinity Fabric to enable high speed communication between GPU Graphic Cards.  For example the MI60 and MI50 can be paired with up to 4 other MI60s and MI50 to achieve a communication speed of over 200 MB/s. For heavy data processing and machine learning applications this type of bandwidth is much awaited feature.

This card supports traditional GPU processing which is suited for running application needing High Performance Computing (HPC) computing. This GPU also comes with the built-in virtualization support which very beneficial for cloud service providers.

AMD also released tools for developer; newly released software includes Application Development Environment (IDE) for Instinct GPUs as well as its EPYC and Ryzen CPUs.

Features of this GPU series are:

  • PCIe Gen 4 Capable
  • Ultra-fast HBM2 Memory
  • 1TB/s memory bandwidth
  • Full Chip ECC and Enterprise-class RAS
  • Advanced System GPU Monitoring
  • MxGPU Virtualized Compute
  • Large Bar Support
  • ROCm Open Ecosystem
  • MI60 to come with 32GB of ECC HBM2 (second-generation High-Bandwidth Memory)
  • MI50 to come with 16GB of ECC HBM2 (second-generation High-Bandwidth Memory)
  • Both these GPUs come with a memory bandwidth up to 1TB/s.

With this release AMD left behind Intel and other GPU manufactures in the market today.
